In 2015, the Cardiff School of Art and Design celebrated its 150th anniversary. At the heart of the city since its opening in 1865 the School, which is one of the oldest in the UK, has had many homes. Beginning life in the oak rooms above the Royal and Morgan Arcades, it is the oldest part of Cardiff Metropolitan University. Since its first site, it has also been housed in The Friary Building, near Cardiff’s New Theatre and at the Howard Gardens Campus which was opened by the Earl of Snowdon in May 1970. In September 2014 CSAD's students and staff took up residence in the new purpose built facility on Cardiff Met’s Llandaff Campus. The building, designed by the architects Austin Smith: Lord, is home to 1200 full time equivalent students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, studying and working in a suite of highly specialist workshops and studios designed to ensure students can operate as professionals from the moment they begin their studies.
